San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1991. [This book is an extensive survey anthology. Each of the 16 chapters cites a dozen or more references. Adult Learner. B. Steinbach. Crisp Publications. ISBN 1-56052-175-9.

Adults as Learners. K.P. Cross. San Francisco, CA, Jossey-Bass, 1981.
Delivering instruction to adult learners. Jeffrey A. Cantor. Toronto: Wall & Emerson, 1992. This book gets pretty heavy into the pedagogy. Unfortunately, Cantor doesn't cite many outside sources; relying more on his own professional experience. Chapter 7, Methods of Instructional Delivery, deals specifically with your issue of adult preferences. At the end of the chapter, he cites Gagne's (1977) The Conditions of Learning ; an undated National Fire Academy (Emmitsburg, MD) training manual (Module 12) simply referred to as "Student manual: principles of instruction"; and finally D. M. Ricks (1982) chapter "Making the most of the first 20 minutes of your training" in P. G. Jones (Ed.) (1982) Adult learning in your classroom. Leadership and the New Science. Margaret Wheatley.
Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive Guide. S. Merriam, R. Caffarella. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1991. $29.95. [This book gets more into the cognitive end of things; and there's lots of material on adult motivation. You'll find extensive discussion of self-study here, but almost nothing on on-the-job. Classroom vs. one-on-one is well covered. Lots of good citations that should prove fruitful when pursued. -Richard Biehl <[email protected]>]

Planning Responsibly for Adult Education: A Guide to Negotiating Power and Interests. Ronald M. Cervero and Arthur L. Wilson. Jossey-Bass, 1994. ISBN 1-5542-628-X. Does an excellent job of balancing "real world" and academic material, while offering clear description and structure against the vagaries of what program development is really like. It also offers a model for recognizing the realities of organization structures (interests and power) and suggest methods for analysis and planning within an ethical context.
Power of Learning: Fostering Employee Growth. Klas Mellander. ASTD, 1993. ISBN 1-55623-893-2.

Web Design
Web Site Usability: A Designer's Guide. User Interface Engineering. You can order the book on-line from http://world.std.com/~uieweb/bookdesc.htm or directly from UIE at 800-588-9855 (US) or 978-975-4343 (outside US). [This is a GREAT reference I have read and would recommend to anyone designing information or training for the web. Because several of the sites used as examples are no longer available (1996 Olympics in Atlanta, for instance) the purchase price has come down from a whopping $79 to $39.95 ($25.00 for educational institutions). Even though you can't go browse some of the examples anymore, the book is still incredibly relevant! UIE also offers a training class that compliments the materials. I am in no way affiliated with UIE, I'm just a big fan.]
