The Story Behind the Training & Development FAQs

I joined the Internet's TRDEV-L discussion list early in 1993 and began replying to the same questions over and over. With about 350 people on the list, several questions I posted went unanswered. As I searched for answers from other sources I wanted to find a way to streamline my learning process. This lead me to begin developing these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) postings. When I found an answer, I posted it to the list. The first TRDEV-L FAQ was a simple text file answering only a few short questions. Today the FAQs are a series of web pages that address as many learning-related questions as I can answer.

These are growing, changing files that reflect the diverse interests of training professionals. While I can't promise everything for everybody, I can confidently say you can benefit from something here. Though I've been in the training industry for about 10 years, I describe what I do today more in terms of its learning and productivity impact. For that reason, I include learning, productivity, performance-based, organizational development, and human resource development questions and answers, too.

With the addition of Eric Snyder's Training and Development Resource Center in 1994, I left the responsibility of keeping up with most web links to Eric. Those within the FAQs are limited to the major sites and groupings. If you have additional links you'd like one of us to include, please let us know.

At the end of 1997 I was able to put the FAQs on PeopleSoft's PeoplePages area, where employees can have personal home pages and links. This way, I was able to update the sights more regularly. Eric still houses an incredible collection of links to all things training-related, but I offer these FAQs as a solid place to start.

Spring 1998 I moved the FAQs to hopefully their final home, a dedicated Learnativity site, where they can be updated whenever needed and can help me track which pages are accessed most often. Though they will be available from my PeoplePages site for a while, too, I would appreciate if you would access them from http://www.learnativity.com/training_FAQs/.  As these exciting changes unfold, I look forward to hearing about anything I can add to make these documents more complete and helpful to you.

On the road to better understanding,

- Marcia
